“A Gem among the Rocks”—Identifying and Measuring Visual Preferences for Mountain Lakes

The high visual quality of lakes bolsters aesthetic and recreational experiences, but little is known about the specific preferences related to mountain lakes. This study therefore aimed at assessing people’s on characteristics using an online questionnaire. Adopting a qualitative approach, we first identified major recognised lakes, i.e., respondents indicated that are typically small-sized with clear, cold blue water embedded in natural landscape. Then, used different picture sets clarity, colour, presence algae, lake shore surrounding land cover quantify preferences. Our results clear preference for blue, absence algae as well large rocks forest around lake. In particular, were highly homogeneous across socio-cultural groups confirmed previous findings. To illustrate applicability our findings, integrated spatial limnological data values four selected European Alps. Finally, discuss findings context increasing demand nature-based experiences implications decision-making.
